Argan tree planting programme
« Small actions for big challenges »
The argan tree (Argania spinosa), Morocco's emblematic tree, plays a crucial role in
preserving arid and semi-arid ecosystems. Replanting it has become an urgent necessity in the face of climate challenges and the continuing deterioration of its natural habitat.
In recent years, the argan forest has suffered significant degradation, threatening not only biodiversity but also the livelihoods of local populations. There are many reasons for this degradation, including
- Over-exploitation: The high demand for wood, used as fuel, is putting excessive pressure on the argan trees.
- Prolonged drought :and desertification: Prolonged periods of drought reduce the availability of water, which is essential for the survival of the argan tree. This causes water stress, affecting the tree's growth, flowering and fruit production. This compromises the survival of the argan tree.
- Overgrazing: Intensive grazing by livestock, particularly goats, prevents the natural regeneration of young plants, thus limiting forest renewal.
- Increasing urbanisation: The expansion of urban areas and infrastructure is encroaching on land dedicated to argan forests, reducing their surface area.
Faced with these challenges, initiatives to replant and protect the argan tree are essential to ensure the survival of this unique tree and preserve its many ecological benefits. With this in mind, the cooperative has set up a program to replant the argan tree. After years of searching for land, this project was launched in 2022.
Thanks to the replanting of 50 young argan plants, with an investment of over 40 KMAD
from its social fund.
These plantings are regularly irrigated to ensure their survival in these climatic conditions marked by low rainfall.
Our ambition now is to continue planting young argan trees every year. However, the main current challenges are the lack of available land and the high cost of water to ensure regular irrigation.
